For iPhones and other iOS devices
The process is straightforward for iOS devices with either a USB-C or Lightning port, but you will need an adapter.
What you'll need:
- An Ethernet cable connected to your modem or router.
- For USB-C iPhones/iPads: A USB-C to Ethernet adapter.
- For Lightning iPhones/iPads: A Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter AND a USB to Ethernet adapter. The camera adapter is necessary to provide enough power to the Ethernet adapter.
- Steps to connect:
- Plug the Ethernet adapter into your iPhone or iPad's charging port.
- Connect the Ethernet cable from your router into the adapter.
- On your device, go to Settings.
- A new Ethernet option will appear in the settings list, often near the Wi-Fi option.
- Select Ethernet to view your connection details. For a standard setup, your device should automatically connect via DHCP
For Android devices
Similar to iOS, Android devices need a compatible adapter. Your phone must also be running Android 6.0 Marshmallow or higher.
What you'll need:
- An Ethernet cable.
- For USB-C Androids: A USB-C to Ethernet adapter.
- For older Androids: A Micro USB to Ethernet adapter.
- Steps to connect:
- Connect the Ethernet cable to your adapter and then plug the adapter into your Android phone's charging port.
- Turn off Wi-Fi and mobile data. Some guides recommend putting your phone in Airplane Mode first.
- Go to Settings > Network & internet > Ethernet. The exact menu path can vary by device.
- Configure the settings as needed. The most common setup is DHCP for an automatic configuration.
-
Your device should connect, and the Ethernet icon will appear in the status bar.
